The UK officially enters autumn next week which means the start of the spider season. The critters often come into our homes as they seek shelter and warmth from the colder weather.
Spiders enter homes through open windows, doors and other small gaps. The peak time for seeing house spiders, such as the Common Fox spider, the Diving Bell spider and the Harvestman, is from early September to the middle of October. Many people fear the critters, so it’s important to know the best ways to stop them from entering homes.
Pest control expert Robert Collins, from MyJobQuote.co.uk, has revealed a specific item which can be effective in deterring spiders during the autumn months. He advises using peppermint oil to repel the insects.
Mr Collins said: “Peppermint oil emits a strong scent which repels spiders. Add 15 – 20 drops of peppermint oil to a spray bottle with water and spritz this in any areas where you’ve noticed spiders in the home.”
The strong aroma of peppermint oil disrupts the sensory receptors of spiders and makes them avoid the areas where it’s sprayed. The critters also dislike the chemicals it contains, such as menthol and menthone.
The expert also recommends using spider repellent plug-ins that emit a peppermint scent. They can easily be places in rooms where spiders are seen more and are an equally effective deterrent.
Vinegar also works to deter spiders, in a similar way to peppermint oil. The critters dislike the scent and are less likely to stay in your home if they can smell it.
Mr Collins explained: “Fill a spray bottle with equal parts white vinegar and water and spritz the mixture around your home. It’s a good idea to spray it close to entry points such as doors and windows to prevent spiders from entering in the first place.”
However, it’s important to remember that, although there are many different species of spider in the UK, not many will bite you. Those that do bite are not harmful to your health and are quit rare.
