Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) suffered a major outage on Thursday. Outage tracking website Downdetector.com noted that thousands of users worldwide were reporting problems accessing X.

The problems with X appear to have affected users of both the social media platform’s app and website. Downdetector’s data showed that 64% of users reported problems using the X app, while 29% of users reported problems using the X website.

The Downdetector data showed that over 70,000 people were affected by the outage, which was first reported at 10:43 am on Thursday. According to a report by the Indian Express, the outage resulted in users seeing the message ‘Welcome to your timeline’ instead of the usual tweets. Our attempt to access X, resulted in the website reflecting the text ‘Welcome to X’, instead of the usual timeline which is shown to users.

Elon Musk’s X and outages:

Notably, this is not the first time X has been hit by outages – the last problem was discovered earlier this month when all outgoing links from the site stopped working and users were instead redirected to an error page with spilled ice cream and the message “This page is down. I scream. You scream. We all scream… for us to fix this page. We’ll stop making jokes and get things up and running soon.”

X has been hit by frequent outages since Elon Musk took over the social media platform in a $44 billion deal last year and subsequently fired most of the company’s staff. The most notable outages occurred in March and July, when users were either unable to access the platform at all or reported problems accessing links, images or videos.

After the July outage, X support wrote:“We had some trouble with our internal systems that impacted many of you globally. Twitter should be up and running as expected — sorry for the interruption.”
